Got Rid of IntenseDebate

I decided to get rid of the IntenseDebate comment system I found out about and installed a few months ago and blogged about here. It turned out to just be much too much of a hassle for not much of a benefit.

The main features that drew me to it were the comment threading and comment voting. But now WordPress 2.7 has comment threading and, after giving it a shot, IntenseDebate has two main problems that I can’t get past.

First of all, it’s a bit slow…WordPress is already really, really, really database heavy and, while IntenseDebate doesn’t query my database, it did increase all my page load times.

And secondly, it’s buggy as hell…at least it has been for me. It’s had a bunch of weird, random problems, none of them occured more than once except one: over the past few months, comments, for whatever reason, just don’t show up on posts. WordPress knows they exist because they show up in the recent comments section of the sidebar and they show up in the WordPress admin, but they don’t show up on the post. This problem started from day one, but has only gotten worse until the past week or so when no comments have been showing up at all.

I pulled the plug on IntenseDebate yesterday when I decided the hassle just wasn’t worth the benefit.

Anyone having a good experience with the plugin?

  1. Yeah, with the advent of WP2.7.1, I’m having all sorts of issues with IntenseDebate. It occasionally goes completely haywire when posting and really slows things down quite a bit. I’m getting ready to deactivate it right now to get things back up to speed.

I had it installed for a few days and begin to see that it just wouldn’t work out for me.

The plugin has great comment management and some really nice added features for comments but ultimately I think facebook is what I need for this website.

Have just been searching around about Intense Debate because I’ve been having the same problems with it. I think you just answered them, though: uninstall.
